On May 13 -14, 2006, the Department of Environmental Quality and the American Lung Association of Virginia participated in the NASCAR weekend event held at the Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, Virginia to launch the Clean Air Champions Campaign. Thousands of Race fans took a Clean Air Pit Stop to learn how they could help reduce air pollution and become Clean Air Champions by keeping their cars properly maintained thus reducing their cars’ emissions during the ozone season from May until September.
The event was a huge success resulting in hundreds of Race Fans taking the Clean Air Champions Pledge. Race Fans pledged to conduct simple and inexpensive maintenance on the cars such as, keeping tires properly inflated, changing dirty air filters, refueling after dark, combining errands, reducing idling time, walking, biking or using public transit and driving gently at a moderate speed.
